Special Options

Available special startup options:

To run silently in the background: pass the argument -silent. This mode is used when scheduling iPlayAnywhere to run in the backgroud when Windows starts. -silent can be used with the -noinit argument ro run silently and not re-scan your iTunes Music Library. If this is used make sure you have already had iPlayAnywhere scan your iTunes Music Library at least once.

To add this option do the following:

Right-click on the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes desktop icon and click on properties.

Go to Target and add -silent to the end of the target. Make sure you add after the double quoted application exe path and name:

e.g."c:\Program Files\iPlayAnywhere\iPlayAnywhere.exe" -silent

To run without automatically re-scanning the iTunes Music Library: pass the argument -noinit. This mode is useful when you have already built your web pages and do not want to rebuilt everything everytime which is especially useful when your music library is large. By default now iPlayAnywhere will prompt the user asking whether to re-scan their iTunes Music Library or not. If the -noinit option is specified the question is not asked and no re-scan is down. -noinit can be used with the -silent argument.

To add this option do the following:

Right-click on the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes desktop icon and click on properties.

name: e.g."c:\Program Files\iPlayAnywhere\iPlayAnywhere.exe" -noinit

To play a specific playlist - the url can be added to to play a specific playlist.

e.g. to play the playlist MarkelSoft Radio - http://68.100.170.31:8090/index.html?playlist=MarkelSoft Radio

To override the default web server port of 8090: pass the arguments -webServerPort {nnnn} (e.g. -webServerPort 8091). Check the windows properties for the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes application and you will see a default of -webServerPort 8090. You can also set the port using the {installation_dir}\config\preferences.cfg webServerPort setting. Use the View -> View Configuration main window or tray menu to change the configuration setting.

MarkelSoft iPlayAnywhere for iTunes - securely access and play your iTunes Music Library from anywhere using any web browser. Support includes the popular Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera browsers. It’s as easy as starting iPlayAnywhere on your PC, sending an email invitation to yourself or someone else, then clicking a link in the email to access and play remotely. The built-in audio and video players can play individual songs or your playlists.

New features include shrink mode, signout from web page or PC user manager, optional auto rebuild on restart, security, User Manager and invite by playlist.
Shrink mode shrinks the display to a small icon displayed in the lower-right hand corner ofyour desktop. The -silent mode now runs iPlayAnywhere in shrink mode silently which is useful for running iPlayAnywhere in the background when Windows starts up.

Special considerations for use with a Router/Firewall.

Special options for program startup. The user is now prompted on program startup asking whether to re-scan the iTunes Music Library or not. A new -noinit

option has also been added to turn off automatic re-scanning.

A -silent option is used when scheduling iPlayAnywhere to run in th background when Windows starts up.

Security and the User Manager for managing user names and groups for secure sign in access. Also lists signed in users which can be selectively signed off from the PC. User can signout from the web pages.

Email Manager for managing invitation email addresses. Also the email addresses can be used by the Security Manager as user names.

For Windows Vista and Windows XP.

When security is enabled, the user must first login to gain secure access to the associated iTunes Music Library. Secure access sign in window.
If security is not enabled, no username and password is required to access the full library or playlist.

The initial default display is the tab "My Music Home Page" which displays all of your playlists. To see all the tracks in selected playlist, select Playlist Details.
The "My iTunes Music Library" tab displays all the tracks in your Music Library. This display is also useful in that it allows you to download any track (in a ZIP file).
The "Audio" tab displays only songs.
The "Video" tab displays only videos such as TV Shows and movies.
The "Artwork" tab display any track artwork found. Note: if including artwork is turned off, nothing is displayed here.
The "Invite User" tab is used to send an invitation for viewing and playing your full music library to another user. For more specific
invitations use the PC client which can send invitations for everything or a specific playlist as well as keeping track of all the users
and groups..

Sign out the logged in user (in this case guest)

Playlist Details:

Displays playlist entries for the selected playlist. Selecting an individual entry plays that playlist entry. Playing a playlist will automatically play the full playlist. Displaying playlist details allows for playing specific playlist entries.

How It Works:

The Application runs on your PC and works with iTunes to acquire the list of all your songs, podcasts, TV shows, movies, and playlists in your iTunes Music Library.

The application is used to send an email invitation containing information on accessing your iTunes Music Library using a web browser. The application itself or the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes home page can be used to send email invitations. Use the home page to send invitations from anywhere using your web browser.

Any web browser can be used to access and play your iTunes Music Library. Click the link in the email invitation or use iPlayAnwhwhere.com if your Web Server is published to go to the iPlayWhere for iTunes Home Page. Single songs, podcasts, TV shows, movies or playlists can be played.

To add your Web Server to the MarkelSoft public web database follow these steps:

Run iPlayAnywhere for iTunes
Go to the Help->iPlayAnywhere.com password... menu to acquire your iPlayAnywhere.com password. do not give this password out as it is your personal password for accessing iPlayAnywhere.com
Go to the Help->Publish Server for iPlayAnywhere.com... menu to add or manage your Web Server.
Use iPlayAnywhere anytime to find your Web Server.

(If you prefer to keep your Web Server private, you can still use the normal email method of sending an email invitation to yourself or others)

Application Toolbar:

Invite User - used to send an email invitation allowing remote access

Test Web Access - used to test the web access to your library.

Refresh - refreshes the song list. This option reprocessing all the iTunes Music Library songs, podcasts, TV shows, movies and playlists.

Refresh Playlists - refresh the playlists only. This option only reprocesses playlists not actual iTunes Music Library entries.

Expand - expands/collapses window to show/hide song list.Song list is hidden by default.

iTunes - display the iTunes application.

Include Artwork - indicates whether or not to include artwork. Not including the artwork makes the program processing go much faster since the artwork image files are not created on disk.

Arrow - changes to shrinked mode.

To exit shrink mode, click on the shrinked window icon.

The stop light is green if iPlayAnywhere is ready or red if processing has not completed.

Application Status Area:

Stop light: has two states green for web server ready or red for web server not ready.

A Web Server not ready or ready status text is displayed along with the full IP address of the iPlayAnywhere Home Page. This is the IP Address sent with the invitation.

Clicking the status area displays the iPlayAnywhere Home Page as does clicking the Test Web Access toolbar button.

The last part of the status area indicates how many iTunes Music Library songs (songs, podcast, TV shows and movies) were found and their total size.

Application Tabs:

My Music Home Page - initial web page shown containing all of your playlists. Select a playlist to play. Once a playlist is selected, click Playlist Details to display a separate window showing all of the songs in the playlist. Select a specific song to play that song.

Your iTunes Music Library - display the main page containing your iTunes Music Library files.

Audio - displays only audio files.

Video - displays only video files.

Artwork - displays an artwork viewer for browsing through all the artwork images.

Invite User - send an email invitation to access your iTunes Music Library remotely. Email contains web address of iPlayAnywhere for iTunes Home Page.

Home Page Actions:

Clicking a heading already selected toggles the sort (ascending/descending)

Clicking another heading sorts on that heading
Click the play icon to play the song or video. An embedded version of the Windows Media Player is used as the player. Audio and Video Player

Click the saveAs icon to save the song in zip format

Selecting a playlist entry, plays all the songs in that playlist

Select a skin changes the display look ‘n feel.

If the file is a supported audio format the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes embedded player is displayed.

If the file is a supported video format, the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes embedded player is displayed.

If the file is not a supported format, a window is display to try to get the browser to handle playing the file.If the browser can not handle the file, you will seee garbage in the window.In this can it is recommended to us the SaveAs functionality to download a .zip file containing the song/video, unzip and then play with another available media player.

Gets song list from iTunes and makes available via a built-in web server. All artwork thumbnails are clickable which when clicked will show the full-size artwork image.

Remotely access and play your iTunes Music Library using any browser. Browser example.

Send invitations for accessing your iTunes Music Library via email to yourself or your friends.

Sort by clicking on the web page heading. Clicking the same heading again toggles the sort.The default sort is ascending by song name.

Security and the User Manager

Username: specifies the user name to add add or change
Password: specifies the user name's password
Login Users and Groups specifies the list of available user names and groups. Sending an invitation when security is enabled requires selecting a user name or group to be used as login credentials.
(email invitations sent with a specific user name requires a login of the user name and password)
Select email: is used to select an existing email address to use as the user name.
Monitor: switches to monitoring mode for monitoring logged in users.
Email Address Manager: is used to manage email addresses. Used by Select email as possible user names. Used by invitation sending for possible fro and to email addresses.
Signed In Users: displayed when there are users signed in. Click to expand (>>) or (<<) hide the list of signed in. To sign out a user, select the user then click the sign out button. The ip address for the user name is shown as [ip_address] before the user name.

When security is enabled, the User Manager is available for managing users and groups. The User Manager can be used to:

add a user
add a group

remove a user
remove a group

change an existing users
change an exiting groups password
monitor logged in users

Sending Invitations
Once a user/group is added, it is available for use when sending invitations. When sending invitations, a user/group the invitee must login as must be selected. This is how access to your iTunes Music Library is securely controlled.

The differences between users and groups
Users and groups are treated exactly the same from a security viewpoint and groups are only provide for logically grouping your users. i.e. you may have user Tom and group Family with Tom being a user and Family being a group that is used by your family. They are both login user names...

iPlayAnywhere provides centralized public access to published iPlayAnywhere for iTunes Web Servers. This allows for easy access for yourself and others from anywhere using your browser. Once the information is published, go to www.iplayanywhere.com to access the information.

If you do not wish to publish the information then you can still use the normal send an email method from the program or iPlayAnywhere Home Page to privately send the information to others.

This provides a quick overview on using iPlayAnywhere for iTunes.

iPlayAnywhere Home Page:

Playing a Song:

Click the desired playlist or the play arrow next it.
To view all the actual entries in the selected playlist, click Playlist Details.
In the audio player the back arrow goes to the previous song in the playlist and the forward arrow goes to the next song in the playlist.
To view and play all of the songs in your iTunes Music Library, click on the Your iTunes Music Library, Audio or Video tabs. The Audio tab shows only songs. The Video tabs only shows videos such as TV Shows and Movies.

Playlist Details:

Displays all the playlist entries for the selected playlist. Selecting an individual entry plays that playlist entry. Playing a playlist will automatically play the full playlist. Displaying playlist details allows for playing specific playlist entries. See playlist details.

PC email Invitation

From: specifies the email address the invitation is from. This is optional.
To: specifies the email address to send the invitation to.
Invitation message: specifies the invitation message which is the body of the email invitation sent. It may be changed.
Invitation playlists lists the available playlists to send an invitation for. Select All Playlists if all playlists are desired.
Login Users and Groups lists the available users and groups. A user or group must be selected and is used as the login credentials by the user when logging in. The login instructions are provided in the invitation sent.

Email Address Manager is used to manage email addresses. Used by User Manager as possible user names. Used by invitation sending for possible fro and to email addresses.
User Manager is used to manage users and groups for secure user login.

An email invitation is used to invite someone to securely access and play your iTunes Music Library. The invitation message is customizable and any changes are saved. Select a playlist to send an invitation for a specific playlist. When security is enabled, which it is by default, the list of available *users and groups is displayed in the invitation dialog. A user or group must be selected and determines what user name the invitee logs in as.

When security is enabled, the email invitation will include the user name and password the invitee should login as to access your iTunes Music Library or specific library playlist.

*When security is enabled, the User Manager is used to manage users and groups.

The list shows all the available email addresses. This list is available for invitation sending for use in the from and to email address fields. The list is also available for the User Manager in selecting an email address to be used as a user name or group.

Security - select to enable security. When enabled, the User Manager is available for managing users and groups for controlling access to your ITunes Music Library. By default this is on.

Include Artwork - select to include artwork in the web pages. By default this is off.

Auto Refresh - select to automatically refresh songs and playlists when your iTunes Music Library changes. Useful for playlists that include dynamic subscription based content such as a podcast. By defult this is on.

Router/Firewall: if you have trouble accessing iPlayAnywhere for iTunes, it could because of your firewall. Make sure the port you are using is opened and/or port forwarding is used. For port forwarding setup the firewall to forward port 8090, for example, to your PC (.e.g. 192.168.0.1). Also see article on how to access a home server behind a router/firewall.
