Using an iPhone

iPlayAnywhere for iTunes now supports the iPhone allowing you to play your iTunes Music Library from anywhere using your iPhone. You have two options with your iPhone, use the soon to be released iPlayAnywhere app or use the Safari browser. Using either options will display screens similar to that indicated below.

When you first run the iPlayAnywhere app, you will see setup instructions for installing iPlayAnywhere for iTunes on your PC then setting up the iPlayAnywhere iPhone app to use iPlayAnywhere for iTunes.

Setup Instructions Setup Settings

iPhone app playlists:

On the iPhone your playlists are displayed. To view the contents of a playlist click the playlist name (e.g. 'Purchased') and a new web page will be displayed with the playlist entries. From there simply select the track in the playlist to play. Note: Even purchased tracks can be played.

iPhone app playlist contents:

To play a track select the playlist entry and the track will be played. When the track is done, click done then iPlayAnywhere to go back to the playlist.

A user can access your library or a specific playlist by:

Quick startup quide
The user is sent an email containing information on accessing the invitee's iTunes Music Library. This includes a link to access the library and user credentials if a silent login is not being done.
Using secure credentials (username and password) for logging in.

Silently logging in which is specified by you when sending the invitation. This automatically passes the credentials and logs in for the user.

You can also turn off the security and not requiring your users to login to play your music.

When you use with your iPhone you can use the iPlayAnywhere iPhone app or the iPhone Safari browser. If you are using the iPhone Safari browser you will get a mobile web page optimized for the iPhone mobile capabilities.

Special considerations:

Use with a Router/Firewall - things to know if you are using a Router and/or Firewall and how to make sure you have Internet access to the iPlayAnywhere web server.

Security and the User Manager for managing user names and groups for secure sign in access. Also lists signed in users which can be selectively signed off from the PC. User can signout from the web pages.

Email Manager for managing invitation email addresses. Also the email addresses can be used by the Security Manager as user names.

Special options for program startup. The user is now prompted on program startup asking whether to re-scan the iTunes Music Library or not. A new -noinit
option has also been added to turn off automatic re-scanning. A -silent option is used when scheduling iPlayAnywhere to run in th background when Windows starts up.

When security is enabled, the user must first login to gain secure access to the associated iTunes Music Library. Secure access sign in window. Additionally, when sending an email invitation, a silent login can be used.
If security is not enabled, no username and password is required to access the full library or playlist.

iPlayAnywhere Home Page: (viewed on iPhone)

To play a track:

Select a playlist and the page below is displayed showing all the playlist tracks. Then select the t rack to play.

How It Works:

The Application runs on your PC and works with iTunes to acquire the list of all your songs, podcasts, TV shows, movies, and playlists in your iTunes Music Library.

The application is used to send an email invitation containing information on accessing your iTunes Music Library using a web browser. The application itself or the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes home page can be used to send email invitations. Use the home page to send invitations from anywhere using your web browser.

A iPhone or any web browser can be used to access and play your iTunes Music Library. Click the link in the email invitation.

How to access your iPlayAnywhere web server behind a router/firewall. Also: special considerations.

Application Toolbar:

Invite User - used to send an email invitation allowing remote access

Test Media Server Access - used to test the web access to your library.

Refresh - refreshes the song list. This option reprocessing all the iTunes Music Library songs, podcasts, TV shows, movies and playlists.

User Manager - expands/collapses window to show/hide song list. Song list is hidden by default.
Setup iPhone - displays information to setup your iPhone iPlayAnywhere application, if purchased.
Setup Router - displays information on setting up a Router/Firewall for iPlayAnywhere for iTunes.

Security - turn security on enabling username/password authentication.
Caching - turn caching of audio, video and other files.
Right arrow - changes to shrinked mode.

My Pictures - this folder contains any pictures you want available. Click My Pictures to open the folder then drag n drop pictures to the folder.
My Documents - this folder contains any pictures you want available. Click My Documents to open the folder then drag n drop documents to the folder.
My Web Doucments - this folder contains any pictures you want available. Click My Web Documents to open the folder then drag n drop web documents (Internet web page links) to the folder.
Other Stuff - this folder contains other files you want available. Click Other Stuff to open the folder then drag n drop other files to the folder.

To exit shrink mode, click on the shrinked window icon.
The stop light is green if iPlayAnywhere is ready or red if processing has not completed.

Application Status Area:

Stop light: has two states green for web server ready or red for web server not ready.

A Web Server not ready or ready status text is displayed along with the full IP address of the iPlayAnywhere Home Page. This is the IP Address sent with the invitation.

Clicking the status area displays the iPlayAnywhere Home Page as does clicking the Test Web Access toolbar button.

The last part of the status area indicates how many iTunes Music Library songs (songs, podcast, TV shows and movies) were found and their total size.

Features:

Application runs on your PC (web server) and is accessible via any web browser (client).

Gets song list from iTunes and makes available via a built-in web server. All artwork thumbnails are clickable which when clicked will show the full-size artwork image.

Remotely access and play your iTunes Music Library using any browser.

Send invitations for accessing your iTunes Music Library via email to yourself or your friends.

Sort by clicking on the web page heading. Clicking the same heading again toggles the sort.The default sort is ascending by song name.

This provides a quick quide on using iPlayAnywhere for iTunes.

1. If you are using a Router/Firewall see this setup guide first.
2. Start iPlayAnywhere for iTunes on your PC: (To order or download see For Windows Vista, Windows XP and the iPhone)

Once iPlayAnywhere for iTunes is done processing your iTunes Music Library a green light is displayed in the stop light. At this point you can text your web access or send an email invitation containing the information to access iPlayAnywhere remotely. If you are adding additional information such as pictures, use the Also Add checkbox. The four buttons will turn green and indicate the number of files for each present. e.g. My Pictures (52) indicates there are 52 pictures.

3. Access iPlayAnywhere Home Page using one of these methods.

Email invitation - send an email invitation and open the email and follow the directions. This is the easiest method. If you are the only one using iPlayAnywhere then send an email invitation to just yourself.
Any browser - see the View->Web Server Address menu to get the iPlayAnywhere IP address and use the IP address in your browser or iPhone Safari browser.
(Coming soon) iPhone iPlayAnywhere app - buy the iPhone iPlayAnywhere app at the iTunes iPhone App Store then see the View->iPhone Application Setup Information for information on setting up the iPhone app settings.
Testing - use the Test Web Access button to test your web access locally.

Playing a Song:

Click the desired playlist and all of the tracks in the playlist will be displayed.

If you are using a Router/Firewalll you must make sure that port 8090 is open for iPlayAnywhere to use. Port 8090 is the default port used by iPlayAnywhere's built-in web server.

Router/Firewall: if you have trouble accessing iPlayAnywhere for iTunes, it could because of your firewall. View the router setup guide.

Firefox on Vista player problems: if you do not see the windows media player when using Firefox on Vista then install this plugin to fix the problem.

Available special startup options:

To run silently in the background: pass the argument -silent. This mode is used when scheduling iPlayAnywhere to run in the backgroud when Windows starts. -silent can be used with the -noinit argument ro run silently and not re-scan your iTunes Music Library. If this is used make sure you have already had iPlayAnywhere scan your iTunes Music Library at least once.

To add this option do the following:

Right-click on the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes desktop icon and click on properties.

Go to Target and add -silent to the end of the target. Make sure you add after the double quoted application exe path and name:

e.g."c:\Program Files\iPlayAnywhere\iPlayAnywhere.exe" -silent

To run without automatically re-scanning the iTunes Music Library: pass the argument -noinit. This mode is useful when you have already built your web pages and do not want to rebuilt everything everytime which is especially useful when your music library is large. By default now iPlayAnywhere will prompt the user asking whether to re-scan their iTunes Music Library or not. If the -noinit option is specified the question is not asked and no re-scan is down. -noinit can be used with the -silent argument.

To add this option do the following:

Right-click on the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes desktop icon and click on properties.

Go to Target and add -noinit to the end of the target. Make sure you add after the double quoted application exe path and

name: e.g."c:\Program Files\iPlayAnywhere\iPlayAnywhere.exe" -noinit

To play a specific playlist - the url can be added to to play a specific playlist.

e.g. to play the playlist MarkelSoft Radio - http://68.100.170.31:8090/index.html?playlist=MarkelSoft Radio

To override the default web server port of 8090: pass the arguments -webServerPort {nnnn} (e.g. -webServerPort 8091). Check the windows properties for the iPlayAnywhere for iTunes application and you will see a default of -webServerPort 8090. You can also set the port using the {installation_dir}\config\preferences.cfg webServerPort setting. Use the View -> View Configuration main window or tray menu to change the configuration setting.

Security and the User Manager

Username: specifies the user name to add add or change
Password: specifies the user name's password
Login Users and Groups specifies the list of available user names and groups. Sending an invitation when security is enabled requires selecting a user name or group to be used as login credentials.
(email invitations sent with a specific user name requires a login of the user name and password)
Select email: is used to select an existing email address to use as the user name.
Monitor: switches to monitoring mode for monitoring logged in users.
Email Address Manager: is used to manage email addresses. Used by Select email as possible user names. Used by invitation sending for possible fro and to email addresses.
Signed In Users: displayed when there are users signed in. Click to expand (>>) or (<<) hide the list of signed in. To sign out a user, select the user then click the sign out button. The ip address for the user name is shown as [ip_address] before the user name.

When security is enabled, the User Manager is available for managing users and groups. The User Manager can be used to:

add a user
add a group

remove a user
remove a group

change an existing users
change an exiting groups password
monitor logged in users

Sending Invitations
Once a user/group is added, it is available for use when sending invitations. When sending invitations, a user/group the invitee must login as must be selected. This is how access to your iTunes Music Library is securely controlled.

The differences between users and groups
Users and groups are treated exactly the same from a security viewpoint and groups are only provide for logically grouping your users. i.e. you may have user Tom and group Family with Tom being a user and Family being a group that is used by your family. They are both login user names...

Secure Access Sign In

When security is enabled, the sign in web page is displayed. The user uses the credentials provided in the email invitation to sign in and securely access the iTunes Music Library.

From: specifies the email address the invitation is from. This is optional.
To: specifies the email address to send the invitation to.
Invitation message: specifies the invitation message which is the body of the email invitation sent. It may be changed.
Invitation playlists lists the available playlists to send an invitation for. Select All Playlists if all playlists are desired.
Login Users and Groups lists the available users and groups. A user or group must be selected and is used as the login credentials by the user when logging in. The login instructions are provided in the invitation sent.

Email Address Manager is used to manage email addresses. Used by User Manager as possible user names. Used by invitation sending for possible fro and to email addresses.
User Manager is used to manage users and groups for secure user login.

An email invitation is used to invite someone to securely access and play your iTunes Music Library. The invitation message is customizable and any changes are saved. Select a playlist to send an invitation for a specific playlist. When security is enabled, which it is by default, the list of available *users and groups is displayed in the invitation dialog. A user or group must be selected and determines what user name the invitee logs in as.

When security is enabled, the email invitation will include the user name and password the invitee should login as to access your iTunes Music Library or specific library playlist.

Email address: specifies a email address to add or delete.

The list shows all the available email addresses. This list is available for invitation sending for use in the from and to email address fields. The list is also available for the User Manager in selecting an email address to be used as a user name or group.
